Politics on the agenda as pupils welcome a House of Lords visit
Pupils at Small Heath Leadership Academy had the unique opportunity to meet a member of the House of Lords and take an active role in discussing the challenges and changes they want to see in Birmingham.
Senior Student Leaders from Small Heath Leadership Academy spoke with The Rt Hon. the Lord Hunt of Kings Heath OBE about key issues affecting their communities and the changes they hope to see. A dynamic platform for pupils to pose questions, present concerns, and share their perspectives, the session celebrated the power of young voices and gave pupils a rare chance to engage with national leadership.
Lord Hunt of Kings Heath also delivered a thought-provoking assembly for Years 7 and 8, exploring democracy, decision-making, and how laws are shaped. Pupils responded with inquisitive, insightful questions, showing real curiosity about how their city - and their country - are led.

The visit highlighted the school’s commitment to ensuring pupils are not only heard, but encouraged to think critically about the world around them. By connecting classroom learning with real political experience, the day offered a vivid reminder that young people are already helping to shape the conversations that will define their city.
Ashley Dye, Assistant Principal at Small Heath Leadership Academy, said: “We are incredibly proud of how confidently our pupils shared their views and engaged with such important issues, and we are very grateful to Lord Hunt for taking the time to visit and listen to them.
“Opportunities like this show that what they say matters and that they can play a meaningful role in shaping what comes next.”
The visit was made possible through Learn with the Lords, an educational initiative run by the UK Parliament that allows pupils to engage directly with members of the House of Lords and explore how democracy works.
