Wombourne retired greyhounds step up for dogs in need and raise enough to save 32 pets' surgeries
Last Thursday (February 19) Home Run Hounds Monkspath, Wombourne, were proud to welcome the Pet Blood Bank. In just a few hours, four of our incredible kennel greyhounds and four homed greyhounds donated around 3.6 litres of blood - that's enough to potentially save the lives of 32 other dogs around the UK, from emergency accident cases to those undergoing critical surgery.
Greyhounds are perfect blood donors due to their naturally high red blood cell count, quiet and calm nature and they are predominantly the universal canine blood type, DEA1 negative. Only arpund 30% of dogs eligible to donate blood in the UK have this blood type, so greyhounds are invaluable.
Days like this remind us just how special this breed are. Not only are they gentle, loving companions, but they are also life savers. A huge thank you to the Pet Blood Bank team for their hard work and to the incredible greyhounds for giving the gift of life.
The Pet Blood Bank will be visiting Home Run Hounds' Broadmarsh and Watford Gap kennels in March, so please get in touch if you would like your greyhound to get involved. To book your greyhound in to donate blood, please call Home Run Hounds on 07488 253537.
