The collection is touring during National Year of Reading 2026 to offer people the chance to take a deep dive into one of the country’s most loved art forms: the humble comic book.

Over 1,500 comics collected over decades since the 1980s have been made available thanks to a generous donator. This large selection of immaculate comics are available for enthusiasts to enjoy at selected libraries across the county over the next 2 years.

From the collection, a small display of titles has been carefully curated by a passionate young library team who have selected comics that are rare, first editions, or might appeal to young audiences.

Hayley Coles, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council, said: “I was a huge fan of comics growing up, reading the Beano, Paddington, Tammy and Cindy as well as those handed down by my brother.

Councillor Hayley Coles praises the exhibition, saying that comics are a "real gateway to reading and imagination for all ages."

“This is a fascinating collection to be gifted and giving people the chance to come in and read them is a great way to celebrate the National Year of Reading. Comics are also a real gateway to reading and imagination for all ages.

“I’m incredibly proud of the vital role our libraries play in local communities and I hope people can come along and check out the display and the wonderful things available at their local library.”

The anonymous benefactor said: “I was just a kid and now am an old man who liked and continues to like reading, which for me has always included comics. In common with books, they allow me a peek into the worlds, feelings and ideas that spring from somebody else's imagination, and occasionally help me along paths of self-discovery.”

Part of the display also features a spotlight on local award-winning comic book writer Kieron Gillen, who has worked on Marvel projects such as X-MEN, Young Avengers and later Star Wars.

Kieron said: "I grew up in Stafford. More specifically, I grew up in Stafford Library.

“Going there was a weekly ritual, and I can absolutely remember key moments when I discovered a still-beloved writer from the shelves. It's great to have a chance to show a little of how we work, and how we brought Stafford to the page."

The current display is at Stafford Library until Friday, February 13 before moving on to Tamworth, Perton, Lichfield, Cannock, Burton, Biddulph and Newcastle Libraries and returning to Stafford Library in December.
