Three new free breakfast clubs on their way after Government funding announced
Children at three primary schools in Cannock Chase will soon benefit from new breakfast clubs, offering free nutritious meals and childcare, following fresh Government funding aimed at supporting working families and boosting children’s life chances.
From April, Moorhill Primary School and Redhill Primary School in Chadsmoor, alongside Chase View Primary School in Rugeley, will begin offering free breakfasts to pupils before the school day starts. The funding is part of a national programme expected to provide meals to more than half a million children.
Thousands of schools were invited to apply for the funding in November, with the three Cannock Chase schools among those successful. The new clubs will help working parents with the morning rush by offering far more flexibility around dropping their children off, while ensuring they start the day well fed and ready to learn.
Josh Newbury, Labour MP for Cannock Chase, welcomed the announcement as a major boost for local families, saying: “These new free breakfast clubs are fantastic news for families in Chadsmoor and Rugeley. As a dad myself, I know that for working parents, they help you get to work for 9am and take the stress out of busy weekday mornings. For children they mean a great start to the day and better outcomes at school.
“Breakfast clubs break down barriers to opportunity. They help ensure that every child, regardless of background, can arrive at school ready to focus and succeed. I am delighted that three local schools will benefit in this wave, and I look forward to even more of our local schools being in future rounds.”
More than five million free breakfasts have already been served to children across the UK through the first wave of free breakfast clubs, with many more planned throughout 2026. The Cannock Chase breakfast clubs will open for the summer term April 2026 as a result of this funding.
The expansion of free breakfast clubs forms part of the Labour government’s wider plan for schools and families which will see every primary school get a free breakfast club in the coming years. The plan also includes last year’s introduction of 30 hours of free childcare for working parents of children aged nine months to four years, as well as action to reduce the cost of school uniforms.
