Explorer Scouts engage with their MP

Explorer Scouts (young people aged 14 to 17) from 2nd Wednesfield had the privilege of spending some time with their local MP Sureena Brackenridge. Sureena spent an evening with them talking about growing up in the area, how she went to university in the area, how she become a teacher in the local area and is now the MP for the area.

She also responded to numerous questions from the young people. These questions included how often she must be in Parliament, the most difficult thing about being an MP, the most rewarding thing about serving the community and whether she had met HRH King Charles.

Sureena then spent some time engaging with the young people as they learnt some first aid and then helped them build gingerbread houses and trains. When asked why she thought Scouts was so important, she said, “It gives young people the opportunity to make connections with others. It gives them time away from their phones, opportunities to learn in a non-educational environment and learning and developing new skills.” She added, “The volunteers are committed to helping the young people try new activities, make friends, learn new skills and encourage them to get involved in the community.”

Explorer Scout Erin said: “I’ve been involved since I was six. I’ve been a Beaver, Cub and Scout and it’s been so much fun. I’ve made friends for life and spent time together at camps with lots of them. Being at Explorers gives me an opportunity to break away from homework and revision.”

Volunteer Martin said: “The Group provides opportunities for young people aged 6 to 17. Some of the 250 activities that we do include cooking, emergency aid, home safety, pioneering, sport, and water activities.” He added: “We are looking for volunteers so that we can open a Squirrel Drey (young people aged 4 to 6). We’re also looking for volunteers to work in the background. These roles include being a trustee or helping with IT or fundraising. Whatever time you can give, we would find a role for you.”
