Brownhills singing group hits high note for literacy
A local community singing group that rose from the ashes of a disbanded choir is proving that friendship and music can change lives. “Singing, Cos We Like It” has announced a major donation of children’s books and concert proceeds to the Rotary Books4Home initiative, timed to celebrate the National Year of Reading.
The group, based at the Brownhills Community Centre, formally presented the donation of high-quality pre-read children's books and a financial grant on Tuesday, 20 January 2026. The funds were raised during their recent "Sing-a-long-Christmas" concert, which saw the community come together for a night of festive music and charity.
The donation will directly support the installation of “Rotary Book Boxes” at local schools—vibrant hubs where children in less affluent areas can select a book to take home and keep forever.
From near-closure to community champions
The group’s success is a testament to resilience. In September 2024, the group faced closure when their previous choir leader resigned. Founders Kay Hughes and her partner in "crime" Debbie refused to let the music stop, recognizing that the group was a vital lifeline of support and friendship for its members.
"We decided to give it a go ourselves because the group was important to us for more than just the music," says the group’s leadership. "We called ourselves ‘Singing, Cos We Like It’ basically because we do! We’ve had amazing support from our 'girls' to keep this community alive."
A local mission for literacy
Choosing Rotary Books4Home as their winter charity was a natural fit. With 2026 designated as the National Year of Reading, the group wanted to ensure that local children in Brownhills and the surrounding areas have the opportunity to experience the joy of owning a book of their very own at home.
"We love helping local causes," the group added. "Every child should be able to have a book at home to read and enjoy." To find out more about Rotary Books4Home and donate children's books go to rotaryalumni1210.co.uk/rotary-books4home
The group’s commitment to literacy won't end with the New Year; they have already announced that their upcoming Summer Concert will focus on raising funds and awareness for adult literacy.
