Birmingham Children's Hospital Charity receives £100K donation

The Morrisons Foundation were delighted to support Birmingham Children's Hospital Charity with a massive donation of £100,000. The substantial grant from the charitable arm of the supermarket will help Birmingham Children's Hospital to transform its Emergency Department. It forms part of a £2 million regeneration appeal, which will help to expand the department’s existing footprint, including clinical areas and a new waiting room.

The waiting room, where the Morrisons Foundation gift will be used, will incorporate designs to include family seating options; beautiful artwork to create a calming space; a play area and digital screens to help distract and pass time; and sensory elements to help patients with additional needs.

Nicole Hermanns, Head of Philanthropy and Strategic Projects at Birmingham Children's Hospital Charity, said: "Our Emergency Department Appeal will completely transform a visit to our ED. The ability to turn our dark, cramped waiting room into an open and comfortable space will make a real difference to our young patients and families needing emergency care.

"This incredible gift from Morrisons Foundation will help us make this new space truly special, with artwork and family-friendly seating, distraction for our patients and siblings, and other amenities we know our families need while they are with us. On behalf of everyone at our hospital, we’d like to say thank you."

The Emergency Department at Birmingham Children’s Hospital is currently the only major trauma centre for children and young people in the Midlands. Originally designed to care for a maximum of 40,000 patients a year, this has increased to in excess of 67,000 sick children annually. As a result of this increase, the Emergency Department is now in urgent need of transformation.

David Scott, Morrisons Foundation Trustee said: “I’m delighted that the Morrisons Foundation has been able to provide this exceptional donation of £100,000 to help transform the Emergency Department at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

“The new ED will make a huge difference to the patients, staff and visitors to the hospital for many years to come and I can’t wait to see the results once the transformation work and wonderful new designs in the waiting room come to life.”

The transformation at Birmingham Children's Hospital will take place in multiple phases, ensuring the department’s life-saving services remain unaffected. Work has recently begun on the new waiting area, which will be open to patients and families in spring.
