Neurophysiologist awarded MBE from Princess Royal at Windsor Castle

A leading Consultant Clinical Scientist at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (BWC) rubbed shoulders with royalty when he collected his MBE from Her Royal Highness Princess Anne at Windsor Castle.

Mr Pete Bill has been recognised for his dedicated work in advancing the field of Neurophysiology and Healthcare Science.

With a career spanning more than two decades at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and nearly 30 years in the NHS, the Head of Neurophysiology, has created a lasting legacy.

He said: "I was genuinely lost for words when I found out. It was a complete surprise and incredibly humbling. I am deeply thankful for the recognition and receiving it from Princess Anne was a real honour.

"I’ve always been passionate about championing healthcare science and giving scientists the recognition they deserve. This isn’t just a personal honour. It’s a tribute to the entire service and the incredible work we do together."

“His work has made a lasting impact on children living with complex neurological disorders and he has made transformative developments, not just to our Neurophysiology Service, but in the field on a regional and national level.

"Pete has made a real positive change in the field of healthcare science. He is truly deserving of this recognition.”

In his role at the Trust, he oversees both clinical and operational developments, driving innovation and service improvement.

His clinical interests include pre-assessment for paediatric epilepsy surgery, with particular expertise in stereo electroencephalography, source imaging and the use of innovative techniques, such as non-invasive eloquent cortex mapping.

Motivated by a strong commitment to enhancing clinical standards and improving outcomes for patients, Mr Bill has been instrumental in establishing a range of advanced neurophysiological services. His contributions have had a profound and life-changing effect on many children, young people and their families.

One of his most notable achievements includes helping to develop a non-invasive brain mapping suite to identify functional areas of children’s brains to assist Neurosurgeons with complex epilepsy surgeries or brain tumour removals. This work has helped improve the quality of life of young people undergoing these major surgeries.

A dedicated champion of healthcare science, Mr Bill is a strong advocate for its role in the future of the NHS. He had proudly held the position of Regional Chief Scientific Officer for the Midlands for the past four years, championing innovation, excellence and workforce development across the region.

He has devoted many years of service to healthcare science and the Academy of Healthcare Science Awards (AHCS) as well as being a previous chair of his professional body the Association of Neurophysiological Scientists (ANS). He also played a pivotal role during the establishment of the academy itself and has been an active council member on the registration council for Physiological Science (RCCP). He successfully supported its merger with the AHCS register.

The Academy of Healthcare Science is the single overarching body for the entire UK Healthcare Science (HCS) workforce, working alongside the healthcare science professional bodies, as well as with professionals from the Life Science Industry and Clinical Research Practitioners, helping to strengthen the visibility of the contribution of those workforces.
