More than 65 colleagues and partners from leading Midlands housing association whg took part in Paul’s Walk on Friday 28 November, completing a 12-mile route from Hatherton Street to Birmingham city centre despite blustery conditions. The walk has so far raised £4,035 for St Basils, which supports young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The annual event is held in memory of Paul Dockerill, whg’s former Director of Energy and Programme Management, who passed away in 2022. Paul was a passionate advocate for tackling homelessness and organised a Christmas charity walk each year during his time at whg. Following his passing, colleagues committed to continuing the tradition in his name.

Organiser Leanne Dagger, Colleague Engagement & Wellbeing Manager said that participants averaged 26,000 steps each. She added: “This walk was about far more than the physical challenge. It was a day of reflection, connection, and shared purpose, honouring a colleague’s legacy and reaffirming our support of a cause that continues to make a meaningful impact. Our project team is dedicated to preserving the essence of what this event represents, with the continued support and blessing of Paul’s family.”

whg provides around 22,000 homes across the Midlands and works closely with communities and partners to support people who need safe, affordable housing. Supporting initiatives that help prevent homelessness is central to whg’s commitment to the success of its people and places.

St Basils supports young people aged 16 to 25 across the West Midlands who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, providing accommodation and support to help them build independent futures.
