Elementary education: Local learners watch Sherlock Holmes at Birmingham Rep
Year 9 learners from Cockshut Hill School, part of the Summit Learning Trust, have enjoyed an exciting trip to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre this month to watch Sherlock Holmes and the 12 Days of Christmas.
The visit provided the group with a unique opportunity to experience a professional theatrical production while deepening their understanding of Victorian culture and 19th-century society. This work will also directly support their upcoming study of A Christmas Carol in GCSE English Literature next year.
Learners conducted themselves impeccably throughout the trip, impressing all staff at the theatre, who described them as “delightful.” Their behaviour, engagement, and attitude were highly commendable, and the school is proud of the way they represented Cockshut Hill School, especially as two Yardley residents took the time to phone the school following the trip to commend the learners on their behaviour at the theatre.

The trip forms part of Cockshut Hill School’s ongoing commitment to providing enriching experiences beyond the classroom, giving young people the opportunity to explore literature, history, and the arts in a real-world context. Crucially, all costs for these activities are met by the school, removing financial barriers so every learner can take part.
Jody Clarke, Principal at Cockshut Hill School said: “This trip was a fantastic way for our year 9s to bring their learning to life and experience culture outside the classroom. Seeing them engage so thoughtfully with a professional production while behaving so respectfully makes us incredibly proud. Experiences like this inspire curiosity, enrich understanding, and support academic success in a really memorable way.”
