Focusing on the killer’s victims, the free event proved so popular last year that the author has been invited back.

“Damian paints a vivid and very engaging picture of Victorian life and its awful crime and poverty,” said Sedgley Library’s Tracy Rollason.

“His talks are always well attended and booking is essential.”

2026 marks the National Year of Reading – a UK-wide campaign that aims to make reading a more regular part of people’s lives. GLL, the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs Dudley Libraries on behalf of the council, fully supports the initiative and celebrates the joy of storytelling through free author events.

“They’re a great way of bringing writers and readers together,” said Stephanie Rhoden, GLL’s Partnership Manager for Dudley. “There’s no cost attached and authors like Damian transport audiences into a different world with the power of their words and presence.

“It’s a kind of magic and really does inspire more reading.”

The Women of Whitehall is an adult-only event at Sedgley Library in Ladies Walk, Sedgley.
