Would you like to learn new skills? Become an Explorer Scout!
Independence, leadership, problem solving, responsibility, social skills, team building are skills you can learn and develop as an Explorer Scout (young people aged 14 to 17).
You’ll also be able to have lots of fun and try some new activities. Volunteer Nick said: “Young people can learn and develop skills, and these will help with applications for apprenticeships, college, employment and university.”
Scouting provides over 250 activities ranging from air activities to cooking, emergency aid to global issues and pioneering to water activities. The Bloxwich Explorer Unit, based in Cresswell Crescent, Walsall WS3 2UW, currently have some spaces for young people to join. Some of the activities they’ve done or got lined up include global issues, hiking, money skills badge, paint balling, the Poundland Challenge and the survival badge.

Krishan and Dylan said: “We’ve played board games, been on hikes, learnt first aid, done some cooking, made new friends and had fun. We’ve also developed our communication, social and team working skills.” Nicole, said: “I joined because a friend encouraged me to come along and thought I would enjoy it. I’ve made new friends, helped at the winter fair and have done some cooking. This week, I’m learning first aid skills. These include learning how to put a bandage on, how to put a sling on, the recovery position and CPR. I hope I never have to use these skills!”
In a recent report, Stephanie Simmons gave 12 reasons why joining Scouts helps with a child’s development. These included, builds confidence and self-esteem, promotes outdoor skills, enhances social skills, provides a safe environment and offers adventure and fun.

Volunteer Nargis said: “Scouting also provides opportunities for adults to volunteer. If you want to volunteer to work with Squirrels (ages 4 to 6), Beavers (ages 6 to 8) Cubs (ages 8 to 10), Scouts (ages 10 to 14) and Explorers (ages 14 to 17), or volunteer in the background, i.e. fundraising, trustee, administration, IT or just helping when needed, we can find you a role.”
