Stafford pupils crowned in homebuilder’s shoebox garden competition
Five students at Veritas Primary Academy in Stafford have won a ‘garden in a shoebox’ competition organised by David Wilson Homes.
The competition is designed to encourage creativity and to encourage kids to think about nature. The students' mission was to collect outdoor items, whether it be rocks, leaves, grass or twigs, and use them to create a wildlife-friendly garden in a shoebox.
The winning shoebox was designed by five students, including Alyssa and Aria, each of whom was awarded an Amazon gift card to celebrate their creative design.
Amie Barber, Sustainability Lead and Nursery Teacher at Veritas Primary Academy, said: “We were thrilled to see our entire school community get involved in the Garden in a Shoebox competition.

“Every class embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, and it was wonderful to watch the creativity and teamwork shine through. A huge well done to the group in Year 4, whose fantastic design was crowned the winner.
“Thank you to David Wilson Homes for giving our pupils this exciting opportunity and for supporting us in promoting creativity and sustainability.”
David Wilson Homes has run ecology-themed competitions like this up and down the country, supporting schools to engage in fun and unique activities with their students and encourage them to think outside of the shoebox.

Helen Lewis, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Mercia, said: “We were so pleased when we saw all the entries for the competition, and the Veritas students rose to the occasion brilliantly.
“It was very hard to pick just one submission to be the winner, and we want to congratulate each student who helped create the fantastic design, as well as all the students who took part.”
