Makers Market launched at hospital

The Midland Met Makers Market was officially launched on December 2, and will showcase a range of local artists, bakers, designers, artisan food producers and other small businesses.

The indoor market can be found in the Winter Garden on Level 5 of the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, giving traders the opportunity to connect with staff, patients and visitors.

Stalls will be open over the festive season, giving shoppers the chance to look for Christmas gifts for their loved ones.

Items available to buy include pet accessories, clothing, cakes, handmade gifts and fresh produce.

Forty-eight-year-old Paula Adkins of Smethwick runs Something Random Gifts and Designs. Speaking at her stall, she said: “I think the market is a really good idea and it’s a lovely space we’re in.

“It’s nice to give patients and their families something to do while they’re in hospital. We’ve spoken to a lot of them, and to staff, and the feedback has been really positive.”

The Makers Market aims to celebrate and support businesses from the local community, as part of commitments from Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, who run the hospital.

The Trust’s ambition is that Midland Met be more than a hospital, regenerating the wider area and providing opportunities for the diverse and vibrant local population.

Head of Facilities Management Ian Oliver said: “We are proud to welcome the local makers community to the Midland Met, and to have created a space where we can showcase the creativity and talent that can be found in the surrounding areas of the hospital.

“If you will be at the Midland Met, I encourage you to visit the Makers Market, as it’s a great opportunity to discover local makers and artisans.”

The Midland Met Makers Market is open 9am-4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
