Lyndon learners take part in The Big Sleepout
Learners and staff members from Lyndon School in Solihull, part of the Summit Learning Trust, have taken part in the 35th annual Big Sleepout, which was run by St Basils the charity and housing association, to raise awareness of the issues affecting homeless people in the region. They collectively raised £1,900 for this year’s event.
Since 1990, the Big Sleepout has been St Basils’ flagship fundraising event, bringing together hundreds of passionate supporters each year to raise vital funds and awareness for youth homelessness across the West Midlands.
Learners began the evening by using only a cardboard box and sellotape to build their own shelter, giving them a meaningful insight into the limited resources many people facing homelessness must rely on.
A hot meal was then served by local charity, the Midland Langar Service Society, which was accompanied by entertainment from the West Midlands Fire Service brass band.

Later, learners took part in a presentation delivered by St Basils, where the charity explained how the funds raised were used and shared powerful first hand stories from young people who had benefited from its support.
Head of School, Syreeta Kapswara said: “I am incredibly proud of our Lyndon learners for taking part in the 35th Big Sleepout. Spending a night outdoors really helps them understand the challenges faced by young people who are homeless, and it’s inspiring to see them raise funds to make a real difference. Their compassion and resilience reflecting our Lyndon character virtues.
