Generations unite for Remembrance Day at Waters Edge Care Home
Generations united for Remembrance Day celebrations as residents of Waters Edge Care Home were visited by pupils from Landywood Primary School to mark the special day.
Waters Edge in Great Wyrley, Staffordshire, is a Specialist Residential Care home to adults aged 65 and above and offers an action-packed schedule of events and experiences for residents to enjoy throughout the year with Remembrance Day being one of their most poignant.
As part of their celebrations, residents enjoyed a visit from Landywood children, who delivered handcrafted poppies to contribute to the displays in the home. In the weeks leading up to the event, pupils, aged between 2 and 11, spent time carefully crafting the beautiful flowers whilst learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and the history behind it.
Headteacher, Andrew Clewer, said: "Remembrance Day is an important event in our school calendar and we do lots of activities to support children's understanding of the history behind this significant day.
Visiting Waters Edge Care Home and engaging with the older generation offers our children a unique learning experience. The memories shared by residents of their experiences of war are very powerful and reinforce the importance of Remembrance Day for the UK.
We feel very fortunate to live in such a supportive community and thank the residents of Waters Edge for giving our pupils the opportunity to spend quality time with them."
In the weeks leading up to the day, pupils created their own poppy displays in school and supported the Royal British Legion by selling Poppies to teachers and classmates in the school Hall. On Thursday, Children were visited by Reverend Marie Meredith, Vicar to the Churches of Great Wyrley: St Andrew's and St Mark's, who led a poignant whole school assembly, sharing poems and a prayer before falling silent for two minutes of reflection and remembrance. Landywood welcomed ex-service personnel in full uniform as part of the service.
On Sunday, November 9, pupils from Landywood will represent the school in the Great Wyrley Remembrance Day Parade, a key event which sees the local community come together to remember. The parade will conclude with a Remembrance Service at Great Wyrley War Memorial Gardens. The entrance gate of which commemorates the residents of Great Wyrley who were killed or missing in World War I and World War II.
With the Staffordshire County Council school admissions portal for September 2026 Reception places now open, Landywood is inviting families to book a tour of the school to see the facilities on offer.
