Wolverhampton family give Caribbean twist to Macmillan Coffee Morning event and raise over £8,000
This year, Marcia Cunnison and her family held their 11th Coffee Morning fundraising event. Their event, in Claregate in Wolverhampton, included traditional Caribbean food and music, games in the garden for the children and different types of cakes all in the name of raising vital money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Marcia hosted this event with her sisters Julia and Sonia, Mum Norma and family friend Doreen. This year’s event has raised over £8,000 including Gift Aid and is by far the most successful event they have hosted in the last 11 years.
The group have strong motivations to support Macmillan as Marcia, Sonia and Julia lost their sister Doreen to leukaemia when she was just 4 years old. Then, four years ago, their uncle, Elroy was diagnosed with cancer.
Marcia said: “Macmillan were brilliant when our uncle was diagnosed with bowel cancer. He had a really positive, practical support from his Macmillan nurse and also help with finances. But it’s not just the practical side of things, it’s the emotional support too. When he had finished treatment and came out on the other side, that’s when Macmillan really helped him.”
Despite concerns over the weather, with wind and rain expected all day, the event went ahead in August and attracted a huge amount of people from the local community. Marcia said: “Seeing everyone come together for the Coffee Afternoon with the Caribbean Twist was truly special. The atmosphere was incredible, filled with so much warmth and generosity, and you could really feel the community spirit.
To know that our collective effort has raised over £8,000 including Gift Aid this year for Macmillan is deeply moving and genuinely overwhelming. It means that we're contributing directly to the vital support services that families rely on during the toughest times.
We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, and attended; your support makes a massive difference.''
John Harrison, Relationship Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support said: “We are so thankful to Marcia, Julia, Sonia, Doreen and Norma for hosting a Coffee Morning to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
This year marks 35 years of the fundraiser, and with almost 3.5 million people living with cancer in the UK, their support matters more than ever. Funds raised help us on our mission to ensure everyone affected by cancer has access to the care they need – no matter who they are or where they live.
Every single Coffee Morning takes us one step closer to better cancer care, so why not get involved and raise a little or a lot to help even more people living with cancer.”
