A support group for men with prostate cancer is in line for a cash boost after being selected as Staffordshire law firm Myers & Co’s charity of the year.

The North Staffs Prostate Cancer Support Group holds monthly meetings at the Joiners Square Community Centre in Hanley for patients, their carers, adult family members and friends, attracting people from across the region and even in Cheshire.

The sessions provide peer group support and information about what patients can expect from the therapies on offer, with the chance to speak to those who are newly-diagnosed, are still undergoing treatment or have had a successful outcome.

A clinical nurse specialist from the urology unit at the University Hospitals of North Midlands attends the meetings to provide professional advice.

In addition, the charity holds advice and awareness days at community groups, supermarkets, factories, offices and other locations. It also runs a telephone helpline and funds PSA screening events.

The charity is also acting as a patient advisory group for three research projects being conducted by scientists at Keele University.

Myers & Co is raising funds through a variety of events and activities, including a Halloween tombola and a twice-monthly ‘laptop lottery’ for its 47-strong team whose computers all have numbers on the back.

Jen Goodwin, head of corporate and associate director at the firm, said: “Every year, we support a local charity that makes a positive difference to the lives of people in our region.

“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men – one in eight get it – and it’s something which is close to home for so many people.

“The North Staffs Prostate Cancer Support Group does tremendous work in increasing awareness and supporting people with the illness, and we will be raising much-needed funds throughout the year to help this worthy cause.”

The charity is led by chairman Clive Stevenson, a former prostate cancer patient. He co-founded the group 20 years ago.

Clive, a retired civil servant, said: “The support from Myers & Co will help enormously towards the expenses of running the charity and will enable us to print more leaflets that inform people about the symptoms and effects of the disease.

“We’re hugely appreciative to be chosen as the firm’s charity of the year, and the money raised will be a terrific contribution towards increasing prostate cancer awareness, which is vital in improving outcomes.”

Established in 2005, Myers & Co has a client base across Staffordshire and beyond.

It is a full-service practice with specialists in dispute resolution, corporate and commercial work, residential and commercial property, civil litigation, employment, family law and private client matters such as wills, legal powers of attorney, Court of Protection and legacy arrangements.

The firm’s chosen charity for its most recent financial year was the University Hospitals of North Midlands Charity, which is raising money to create a quiet outdoor contemplation area at the Royal Stoke University Hospital for parents who have suffered the loss of a pregnancy or baby.

Myers & Co donated £2,500 towards the campaign after staging themed fundraising events as well as raffles and cake bakes.

The firm is part of MAPD Group, which was founded by Brian Cullen and Joanna Kingston-Davies in 2020 to power the growth of local law firms nationally through acquisition. The initials stand for Making a Positive Difference.
