Dudley care home assists resident in reconnecting with council colleagues
A delighted ex-West Midlands council worker was reunited with his former workmates after three decades apart, thanks to support from his dedicated care team.
Graham Lane, 84, lives at Netherton Green Care Home in Dudley and was nervous about reconnecting with his old West Midlands County Council colleagues after such a long time.
But after Activities Coordinator Karen Winmill gave Graham a pep talk, arranged transport for the 40-minute journey and promised to accompany him to his works reunion, he decided to go.
And after spending a wonderful afternoon laughing and reminiscing with old friends, Graham – who worked as the assistant to the council’s Chief Executive - was glad he went.

Graham said: “I was a bit apprehensive, but as soon as I got to the party, I was put at ease as I got such a warm welcome.
“It is amazing how time flies, and that 30 years have gone by since I retired. But once we started talking, the years melted away, and it was very nice to catch up and talk about old times.”

The party took place at The Physician in Edgbaston, where everyone gathered to celebrate the 80th birthday of Mike Mitchell, who remains a close friend of Graham’s and visits him often at Netherton Green.
Mike wanted to turn the occasion into a works reunion too, so he invited West Midlands County Council peers, including Graham.
After hearing about the invitation, caring Karen, who works at the Advinia Care Home, was determined that Graham wouldn’t miss out by going along with him.
Karen said: “I knew that Graham would have a lovely time, and it was my pleasure to support him on the day.

“I think anyone would feel a bit nervous going to see people after such a long time, but it was so nice to see the way everyone greeted Graham.
“His face lit up as he got chatting, and there were so many stories shared about their working lives and the good times everyone shared.
“I’m so glad we were able to get Graham there and to give him a day to remember.”
