Care UK’s Mercia Grange, on Lichfield Road in Four Oaks, has been shortlisted in the community involvement category of the Caring UK Awards, which champion and reward excellence and team effort in care homes across the UK.

Mercia Grange was nominated due to its consistent connection to the community. The team focuses on building links, not only with the residents but also their family members and those in the local area.

The home is regularly involved in fundraising for local organisations, providing support for everyone from veterans to people living with cancer. It has donated toys to children at Christmas and provided lunches for the homeless in Birmingham city centre.

Other examples of the home’s success include its dementia understanding events. Customer Relations Manager Rachel Mackay is a dementia ambassador through the Alzheimer’s Society and hosts Dementia Friends sessions in businesses throughout the area to help create a more dementia-friendly community. Her work extends to children as young as three, providing them with an awareness of dementia through educational sessions by using language they understand.

Home Manager Michael McNelis said: “We’re so pleased to have been recognised for our efforts.

“We work incredibly hard to make sure the residents are connected to the community and for our neighbours to have an excellent relationship with us.

“We believe a strong sense of community is essential for the wellbeing of residents and the team, and we’re incredibly proud to have been praised for this. We’re excited to continue fostering these connections and creating an environment where both residents and the wider community can thrive together.”

The awards will take place at Athena in Leicester on Thursday, December 4.
