Back to My Old Self: How Slimming World in Sedgley changed my life
For years, I felt trapped in a cycle of low confidence and constant discomfort. At my heaviest, I had gained 2 stone 2lbs and over time, the weight began to affect not only my physical health but also my emotional wellbeing.
I no longer wanted to go out, dreaded trying on clothes, and resisted buying bigger sizes. Even everyday tasks felt like a struggle because, deep down, I simply didn’t like who I saw in the mirror.
On top of this, my irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) had never been worse. Flare-ups became part of my daily life, which I now realise was heavily driven by the unhealthy, fatty foods I was eating. Emotionally, I felt flat and uninterested in everything around me. Although I was still able to exercise, my confidence was at rock bottom.
The turning point came when I realised how much my health and my mood were being controlled by my weight and IBS. I’d attended Slimming World in the past and knew it worked, so one day I simply decided enough was enough.
Walking into group for the first time, I felt a mixture of relief and nerves. Thankfully, I’d already texted the consultant, which made it easier. To my surprise, the group was buzzing, it was lively and filled with people who were supportive from the start. Very quickly, I felt like part of a family.
That first week, I lost 4lbs, and it gave me the motivation I needed. Over the next 10 months, I gradually lost 2 stone 2lbs. Food Optimising was a revelation, not only did I discover new foods, but I also fell in love with cooking again. One-pot meals like chicken orzo became family favourites, while Slimming World’s moussaka was such a hit I could happily eat it every day. Meal planning has been a game-changer, and now I’m more mindful about shopping and cooking. I even enjoy using my Syns sensibly – whether that’s a drizzle of sweet chilli sauce, a spoonful of mayo, or even a well-earned pint of real ale.
The impact has been life-changing. My IBS flare-ups have completely disappeared, which means I can go anywhere without worrying about what I eat. My energy levels have soared, and more importantly, my confidence has returned. I finally feel like I’m back to my old self – someone who enjoys life, feels good in clothes, and has a genuine zest for living again.
Slimming World hasn’t just helped me lose weight; it’s given me my freedom back. Slimming World has inspired me so much that I have now trained to be a consultant and will be running groups in Sedgley at ST Chads RC Parish Centre on Wednesday evening at 5.30pm and 7pm from 22nd October 2025.
