'Bounded by Roots, Divided by Paths' - celebrating Black History Month
To celebrate Black History Month in October, Dudley Library is staging a free exhibition by Nigerian-born multidisciplinary artist Abraham Babajide Cole from October 1 to 31.
Entitled ‘Bound by Roots, Divided by Paths’, the exhibition amplifies the voices of displaced and migrant communities, exploring both personal and collective reflections on identity and belonging.
Spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, textile printmaking, illustration, and digital design, Cole’s recent projects include Ìjìnlẹ̀ Ara (The Depth of Self) at Omeka Gallery, Lagos (2025), a series examining portraiture and self-discovery; Suns of Egypt at Blank Wall Gallery, Athens (2024), which explored Biblical and Qur’anic narratives of migration and spirituality; and his debut solo show, Deep Introspection, at ArtRooms Gallery, Birmingham (2022).
“As a Dudley resident, I believe it is essential to hold this exhibition at Dudley Library, which serves as a central hub for the community,” said Abraham. “The venue not only reflects Dudley’s diverse heritage but also connects directly with local history, particularly the migration stories that have shaped the area.”
The exhibition runs concurrently with Dudley History Festival and will officially launch on Wednesday, October 1, from 6-8pm and everyone is welcome to attend.
“This promises to be an engaging show that provides an opportunity to reflect on how black people and migrant communities have contributed to Dudley’s cultural identity,” said library manager Sharon Whitehouse. “We’re delighted to be hosting it.”
Abraham is looking for volunteers to support artistic workshops being held at Dudley Library in the lead up to the exhibition. No experience is needed – just enthusiasm, energy and community spirit.
Operating under the Better brand, GLL is the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs Dudley’s libraries on behalf of the council.
