The Tipton & Coseley Building Society is hosting a series of coffee mornings in its branches during UK Savings Week, starting on Monday,  September 22.

The aim is to get people engaged in saving, whether they’re starting from scratch, or just want to make the most of the money they’ve already set aside.

According to new research commissioned by the Building Societies Association for UK Savings Week, more than a third (34%) of adults in the West Midlands have less than £1,000 in savings, while 13% have no savings at all.

Of those who are able to save, 34% keep the funds in their current account, which means they won’t earn any interest.

The Tipton’s head of retail Harjit Singh says people shouldn’t feel daunted by saving and will find plenty of help available if they’re not sure where to begin.

He said: “UK Savings Week is a great reminder of how important it is to regularly check your savings and make sure they’re working the best way for you.

“We are running informal coffee mornings in each of our four branches throughout the week so people can chat about their savings with our friendly teams, while enjoying a cake and a cuppa.

“Building a savings habit takes time and people are sometimes put off because they assume having a dedicated savings account means you need to invest large sums of money, which really isn’t the case.

“Saving is for everyone and building societies like ours are ideally placed to assist. It’s always satisfying to see your nest egg grow as you work towards a particular savings goal.

“Having access to savings also creates a safety net should an unexpected bill land, offering both security and peace of mind.”

Each event runs from 9.30am until 11.30am. There’s no need to book and you don’t have to be a Tipton customer to attend.
