Champions crowned at Cannock Bowling Green Club finals day
On Saturday, August 30, Cannock Bowling Green Club held it finals day. This event is the culmination of all the major knockout competitions, which members entered at the beginning of the bowling year in April and have played in throughout the season.
In all 4 main separate finals matches were contested on the day. For the finalist it’s a very serious occasion as they are playing to see their names engraved on some very coveted trophies, for the club members generally it’s an opportunity to socialise and support their chosen favourite competing for the club’s silverware.
There were some very close matches starting with the Novices trophy, for members who had never won a competition, with Andy Brittle beating Bill Evans. Pairs handicap, where players names are drawn to play together at the start of the season, this year Peter Wood and Steve Faizey narrowly beat Harold Bould and Charlie Sutton. In the singles Handicap Bill Evans beat Ted Dawson. In the final game Singles Scratch Ted Dawson beat Andy Brittle.

Its was also the final official function on the green for the Club Captain Brian Lyons, and vice-captain Ted Dawson who have decided not to stand for election having served the club for the past few years in these roles. The new Captain will be appointed at the next AGM later this year.
Although the club does not play league matches it does have an active programme of friendly games against local bowling clubs plus one-day competitions such as Presidents Club and the McGill Flyer alongside a number of social events.
Cannock Bowling Green club is one of the oldest bowling clubs in the country, the lawn has been used for bowling since at least 1753 and provides a green space in the middle of the town.
