Carlin Cup unites Birmingham Leisure Centres in tribute to colleague
Staff from nine Birmingham Community Leisure Trust (BCLT) leisure centres recently came together to take part in the Carlin Cup, a football tournament held in memory of Darren Carlin, a much-loved colleague, who passed away five years ago following a battle with cancer aged just 50.
For the fifth year running, the tournament was staged at Fox Hollies Leisure Centre, honouring Darren, who was a long-serving Duty Manager at Cocks Moors Woods Leisure Centre before his untimely passing in 2020.
In 2021, the Carlin Cup was created to honour Darren’s 30-years of service in the leisure sector and to bring colleagues together after the challenges of the COVID pandemic.
Now a staple in the BCLT calendar, the annual event offers staff the chance to enjoy an afternoon of football, food, and friendship, all while remembering a valued team member.
Shelley Randal, Facility Manager at Fox Hollies Leisure Centre is a key part of the events organising team each year. She said: “Darren was someone who brought people together, a passionate football fan and a well-loved figure at the centre, respected by both staff and customers. He was a kind and hardworking individual who is deeply missed. The Carlin Cup continues his legacy by not only honouring his memory but also serving as an incredible staff engagement event that brings all BCLT centres together.
“It’s always filled with great atmosphere, sportsmanship, and friendly competition, with many staff coming out to support their teams on the pitch or cheering from the sidelines. Whether or not staff knew Darren personally, the Carlin Cup has become an annual tradition that unites us all as one contract.”

The Carlin Cup had previously been dominated by the Stechford Leisure Centre team, who won the title four years running. But in 2025, a new champion was crowned, as a squad from the facility Darren worked at - Cocks Moors Woods Leisure Centre - lifted the trophy for the first time.
