The Fox Hollies hijabi fitness trainer who’s inspiring women to achieve
Personal Trainer, Romana Naz Khan, who proudly wears the hijab, is breaking down barriers and helping customers at Fox Hollies Leisure Centre find strength and a sense of belonging.
Romana’s fitness journey started after giving birth to her fourth child. She experienced many challenges that women often face in silence, from weight gain, loss of self-confidence and health struggles.
Determined to reconnect with the women she once was, Romana took her first step toward bettering herself. She became a member at Fox Hollies, where she discovered her passion and love for health and fitness, which eventually led to her becoming a qualified Personal Trainer (PT).

“Fox Hollies gave me the space to rebuild myself, joining as a member meant that I could stay close to that environment of growth. The centre offers a welcoming and empowering space where anyone can thrive. With the dedicated women’s only gym, experienced trainers and vibrant community, it’s a place where people from all backgrounds can feel confident and supported!” Said Romana.
Now working as a freelance PT in the centre’s women’s only gym, Romana is not only helping women achieve their fitness goals but also serves as a powerful role model, especially for Muslim women who rarely see themselves represented in the fitness industry. Wisam, a member at Fox Hollies, shared: “I was truly inspired seeing a fellow hijabi working confidently as a personal trainer. It motivated me greatly, as becoming a personal trainer has always been one of my biggest passions, and I am now working towards it.”

Reflecting on her journey, Romana said the experience has been both challenging and deeply rewarding: “Being a hijabi trainer is empowering. People questioned how I could succeed but I kept going. Being visible in this role means everything. When I received Wisam’s message, it reminded me why I do this, to inspire others like me. What I love most is the real impact we get to make in people’s lives!
“I would just like to say to anyone thinking of becoming a personal trainer, you don’t have to wait for permission. Be the representation you wish you had!”
