Local author publishes picture book to help families talk about loss without religion
Aldridge-based author Matt Walker has released a new picture book, What Comes After, written to help families explain death to young children without relying on religious ideas.
The book follows the story of an old bear who gently explains to a younger cub what happens when life comes to an end.
Given that most parents with young children are non-religious, Matt wrote the book for those who want to explain death without mentioning heaven.
"Most picture books about death lean heavily on religion, but most parents today don’t feel that reflects their beliefs. I wanted to offer a gentle, comforting alternative that still gives children hope and reassurance. Death is a hard subject, but children are naturally curious — they ask questions adults often find difficult to answer. My book is about giving parents a way to start those conversations without mentioning heaven."

Matt hopes the book will help open conversations in homes, schools, and support groups, especially for children experiencing loss for the first time.
