Letter to the editor: 'I Left Teaching to Save My Son from It' - mum’s mission to bring play back into schools
I was a deputy head in a top academy, a state school governor, and a mum who believed in the system until I couldn’t anymore. Denied flexible working after having my son, I was told leaving would be “giving up on my career.” I left anyway. I’ve since built My Mummy Teacher into a platform helping thousands of families and educators champion play. I sold my house to get my son into the “right” school — then moved him to private after seeing how broken the system really is.
Now I’m campaigning for change, starting with a government petition to make play and continuous provision statutory in Key Stage 1. It launched on Friday the very same day Bridget Phillipson said 4-year-olds should “sit still” and within two days we’d already hit 35,000 signatures.
I’m ready to speak, write, or appear wherever I can. I’ve met the King, been recognised by Theo Paphitis, and taken my kids across the world to rethink what learning can look like. I know the system from the inside, and I know how it can be better.
Let’s talk.
