Lichfield man’s mission to run 52 marathons in 52 weeks for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity
A Lichfield man is just nine marathons away from completing a challenge that will have seen him run a mammoth 52 marathons in as many weeks, to raise vital funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.
Over the past 10-months, 34-year-old Chris Caddy, has run 43 marathons and has so far raised over £2,200 to support the hospital’s sick kids.
It all began last year, when Chris, who is a train signaller for Network Rail, felt it was his time to give back to charity and as a proud dad to his seven-year-old daughter, Mia, it made sense to support one of the Midlands’ most iconic children’s institutions.

With his cause decided, Chris turned his attention to the challenge. A keen runner with a couple of marathons under his belt, Chris wanted to inspire Mia and push himself and take on a challenge so tough even he didn’t know he would be able to complete – 52 marathons in a year.
Since the start of his challenge, Chris has run marathons along a trusted 26.2 mile route around Lichfield, taken part in official events such as the Manchester, Leeds and Loch Ness Marathons, and even taken his running abroad to complete the Paris and Barcelona Marathons. Mia has even taken part in a junior run to show her support.
Chris said: “Some of my marathons so far have been tougher than others but overall, it’s been an enjoyable journey. A particular favourite was on New Year’s Eve when I ran at midnight, amongst all the fireworks!
“Thankfully Mia has never needed Birmingham Children’s Hospital but I know lots of children who have and we’re just so lucky to have such a fantastic facility on our doorstep in case we ever do. I'm so grateful to everyone who has donated so far to help support the incredible work that goes on at the hospital.

Now, more than 80 per cent of the way through his challenge, Chris is facing the final push to the finish line, which he hopes to complete in Lichfield’s Beacon Park with friends and family joining him for a lap or two.
Annie Eytle, Head of Public Fundraising at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “One marathon is no mean feat but Chris is so close to completing 52 – a whole year’s worth! We’ll be cheering him on as he crosses his very last finish line.
We’re so grateful for Chris’ continuing commitment and determination in this gargantuan challenge. He’s already raised a phenomenal amount, which will go on to help us continue supporting our brave patients and families.”
