Teamwork in action: Wolgarston High School’s Year 9 students conquer challenges at Enterprise Day
On Thursday, 10 July, over two hundred Year 9 students at Wolgarston High School took part in the school’s Enterprise Day. The event organised by Mr Harry Phillips (Teacher of Business) has become an annual tradition at the school.
The event allowed the Wolgarston students to take part in creative and team building activities in the school’s hall and gym. This year’s task was for students to be able to research, cost and design a two-storey school canteen. Students then took part in group presentations explaining their ideas and why their design should be chosen.
“Events like these are so important for our students, they are able to acquire more confidence and develop their practical skills,” said Mr Matthew Skinner (Assistant Head), “It was brilliant to see all of our students working together, completely engaged, creating exceptional bespoke architectural designs.”

After the group presentations the final four, one from each house were then shortlisted to present their designs to Mr Andrew Greenwood (Assistant Headteacher) who chose the overall winning team.
“Having watched the presentation of the four selected houses designs it was an incredibly difficult decision to select a winner,” said Mr Greenwood, “The four finalists were all worthy winners but the sustainable and green concepts of the Himalayas team from Mrs Stanton’s tutor group gave them the overall advantage. Their idea of having more indoor green spaces made their design stand out.”
"Enterprise Day has been a brilliant showcase of our student’s creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Our Year 9 students rose to the challenge of designing a new school canteen that meets the needs of a diverse group of stakeholders—from students and staff to the local authority and the community,” said Mr Phillips, “Their innovative ideas and excellent buildings reflect not only our student’s entrepreneurial spirit but also their ability to work together effectively as a team. We will look forward to running the event next year with local business - INCO contracts."
“It was amazing to see our students excel in a different learning environment. Enterprise day enables students to work collaboratively with their peers on key lifelong learning skills such as budgeting,” said Mr Daniel Boden (Headteacher), “I was so proud of the student's achievements by the end of the day and the way in which they spoke with confidence about the products that they have designed.”
