House of Lords comes to The Link Academy in national education initiative

The Link Academy in Dudley was thrilled to welcome Baroness Natalie Bennett of Manor Castle as part of the popular Learn with the Lords programme, a national initiative bringing Parliament to schools across the UK. Fifty student council representatives from Years 7 to 10 gathered in anticipation for a unique opportunity to engage directly with one of the most prominent voices in British environmental politics.

During the visit on Friday, 11 July, Baroness Bennett spoke to learners on a range of topics including their journey into politics and the role the House of Lords has in the passing of laws, holding the government to account and making recommendations to the government on a range of topics through its committee work.

The learners prepared thought-provoking questions in advance, ranging from the future of the UK Parliament to the balance between environmental protection and economic growth. When asked what advice she would give to young people interested in politics, Baroness Bennett encouraged learners to “never underestimate the power of local action and persistence,” and reminded them that “politics isn’t about being perfect it’s about showing up and caring.”

Baroness Bennett also tackled tough questions, including whether gender plays a role in political influence, how she prepares for speeches in the Lords, and what law she would change if given the chance, highlighting her ongoing campaign to ban environmentally harmful biocides, as one such pressing priority.

Reflecting on the experience, Amman Ahmed and Kate Brown, co-leads of The Link Academy’s Student Council, said: “This was a rare and powerful opportunity for our learners to engage directly with national politics. For many, it was their first time having an open dialogue with a public figure like Baroness Bennett. The visit perfectly aligned with Parliament’s mission to demystify democracy, and it’s inspired our learners to see themselves as future leaders.”
