A dedicated family haven where loved ones can find peace, comfort and privacy during end of life care is set to open this week at St Giles Hospice, thanks to funding from the government and a charitable trust.

The project has been made possible through a combination of funding sources, including a grant from the Francis and Eric Ford Charity Trust and the government's recently announced £100 million funding boost for the end of life care sector, which was specifically earmarked for refurbishments and enhanced facilities for patients and visitors.

The newly renovated space is being completely transformed to create a welcoming environment where families can spend quality time together away from patient rooms.

The project has involved extensive renovation work, including knocking through into an adjacent office to create an open space, refurbishing a bathroom, installing new flooring throughout, complete redecoration, adding kitchen facilities, and implementing a new lighting scheme.

The family lounge will feature comfortable sofas, a television, and kitchen facilities allowing visitors to make drinks and food. A dedicated children's area will adjoin the main room, equipped with a games console, games, and a TV, ensuring younger visitors have an appropriate space during what can be difficult times.

The development addresses a significant need, as visitors currently have limited options, often having to sit in corridors on benches with no quiet space for personal discussions.

Elinor Eustace, CEO of St Giles Hospice, said: "This new family lounge represents our commitment to supporting not just our patients, but their entire family network during their end of life journey. We understand how important it is for families to have a comfortable, private space to gather, rest, and support each other during challenging times."

Vicci Pountney, Trustee at the Francis and Eric Ford Charity Trust and a volunteer at the St Giles Inpatient Unit, was inspired to support the project after witnessing a number of special events at the hospice. Her desire to ensure St Giles continues to provide patients and their families with special moments and wishes led to the Trust's generous contribution.

The government funding comes as part of a significant investment package announced by Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting in December 2024, designed to support hospices in providing essential end of life care. The investment was specifically intended to support improvements including refurbishments, IT system upgrades and enhanced facilities for patients and visitors, as well as to develop outreach services to support people in their own homes.

The new family lounge will open on Wednesday, 16 July and will be available for use by all visitors to St Giles Hospice.
