Lichfield Lions make a 'spectacle' of themselves
Lions Clubs are now the only organisation in the UK which recycle used spectacles and Lichfield Lions are certainly doing their bit.
Sight has always been a signature project for Lions ever since Helen Keller in 1925 challenged them to become "Knights of the Blind". Did you know that the white stick used to indicate someone with a vision impairment was a Lions idea?!
Lichfield Lions have put collection bins in a number of local locations where members of the public can drop off their old and unwanted spectacles - even broken ones. Drop off points are currently located in Lichfield at Specsavers, Colin Lee, Boots and Grace Cares. In Burton-on-Trent we collect from Boots and Queens Hospital. More locations are being added all the time.
These are then all taken to the National Headquarters for use in developing countries or recycling them for precious metals. In the last year Lions HQ despatched more than one million spectacle and Lichfield's latest consignment was over 12,000.

But that's not all Lichfield Lions do to champion the cause of sight. One of their members regularly volunteers and goes to India to help at eye camps where locals with visual problems are treated.
