Local man to walk 5K with daughter and granddaughter just weeks after being given two choices; wait to die or have lifesaving surgery

After surviving bladder cancer, beating throat cancer once, and enduring a devastating recurrence that nearly cost him his life, 71-year-old Michael McGowan from Stone, is once again defying the odds — this time by taking on a 5K walk to raise money for the Throat Cancer Foundation.

In late 2024, Michael and his family were dealt a crushing blow: his throat cancer had returned, more aggressively than before. The diagnosis came after a period of remission and celebration, during which Michael had rung the bell marking the end of his cancer treatment. It was the second time he’d overcome cancer, having previously beaten bladder cancer years earlier.

But this time, the outlook was grim. Admitted to hospital in a critical state, Michael was given two stark options: palliative care or a major, life-saving operation — a laryngectomy and tracheostomy. Too unwell to undergo surgery immediately, he stabilised over several weeks and, with incredible determination, chose to fight for his life.

The surgery went ahead, but it was just the beginning. Michael spent four months in intensive care, enduring sepsis, pneumonia, and multiple life-threatening infections. His family kept vigil at his bedside, preparing again and again for the worst.

And yet — Michael pulled through.

Now, just a month after returning home and adjusting to life with a stoma, Michael has set his sights on something remarkable: participating in a 5K 'Move Against Cancer' walk. He won’t be doing it alone. Walking proudly by his side will be his daughter Jodie and 8-year-old granddaughter Olivia.

“I think he’s absolutely bonkers for even contemplating it so soon,” Jodie said. “But his determination is incredible. Come rain or shine, blood, sweat, and no doubt tears, we’ll be walking that 5K with him to raise funds for a fantastic charity.”

The walk is more than a fundraiser. It’s a powerful symbol of survival, resilience, and hope for those still facing the fight.

Funds raised will support the work of the Throat Cancer Foundation, which provides awareness, advocacy, and practical support for people affected by throat cancers.

Gordon Dow, Trustee at the Throat Cancer Foundation, said: "Michael’s story is nothing short of extraordinary. His strength and refusal to give up, even in the face of such adversity, inspires us all. Seeing him take on this challenge alongside his daughter and granddaughter is a powerful reminder of what resilience, love and hope really look like. We’re incredibly proud to stand behind Michael and his family."
