Plot holders on the allotments invited the children to judge their scarecrow competition. "It started off as a bit of fun and just grew and grew" said Kate Gilbert, secretary of the Crowther Road Association. "In the end we had 22 scarecrows and they just keep on coming."

The judges, from Year Six, assessed each scarecrow on scariness, originality, durability and fun. Fun was had by everybody as the children moved around the three-acre site taking in the crops, trees and flowers as well as the scarecrows. Their top-secret verdict will be announced at the allotments summer celebration on Sunday.
