Schoolchildren meet the scarecrows

On Tuesday a group of Year Six students from SS Peter and Paul Catholic Academy visit Crowther Road Allotments to judge the midsummer Scarecrow Competition. Although the school and allotments association have been next-door neighbours for many years, this is the first time that children will be visiting the site to see what goes on, and help to choose the best scarecrow.

Kate Gilbert, secretary of the Allotments Association says: "It all started with one scarecrow, called Gertrude, that a couple of members put up on their plot. She had so much character we thought, why not invite other people to make their own? From there we had the idea of a competition. But how to judge it?

"So we decided to invite the school next door and were delighted when they accepted. We couldn't believe it when 21 scarecrows appeared! It's captured everyone's imagination".

The school students will be asked to judge the scarecrows on fun and originality. The winners will be announced at our summer party on Sunday.
