Chase Terrace Ladies Group reminisce at their last ever meeting
Gail advised that at the last meeting in July members were invited to a meal at The Rag. Very sadly, this was to mark the end of the group. Due to difficulties beyond their control the committee were no longer able to run things. Volunteers to take over had not been found.
The members welcomed Steve Geale who talked about 'Cops on TV'. He gave us a nostalgic trip through the many cops show on the box. He talked about the time when there were only two black and white channels, and the national anthem was played at the end of the evening. Cop series really started on the radio with Paul Temple on the Home Service from 1938 – 1969. This was followed by Dick Barton, Special Agent. This programme came out in 15-minute shorts and was listened to by 20 million people.
The film The Blue Lamp and the Lavender Hill Mob led to programmes like Dixon of Dock Green.
A number of actors performed as Sherlock Holmes who was created by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. Steve talked about the stars of the many cop programmes and particularly mentioned the leading ladies. There has been a total of 3,200 detective programmes some of them getting grittier as time went on. One or two particular favourites included Morse/Lewis/Endeavour and Midsomer Murders of which there have been 24 series.
Everyone enjoyed the talked and reminisced about the actors involved in the many shows we had all enjoyed.
