I visited a popular takeaway in Wolverhampton to see if its new spicy sauce lived up to the name
It's a sauce which the chain that made it claims to be the hottest yet, bringing an extra zing to a quality kebab.
German Doner Kebab (GDK) has been making a name for itself as the place to go for quality food, with its kebabs providing a hot, tasty and welcoming meal and a nice change to the saturated kebab market.
With a wide range of beef and chicken kebabs, served either in the signature waffle bread or as a wrap, burrito or quesadilla, as well as in boxes and bowls and as a burger, the GDK range has become very popular with foodies, with stores in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Merry Hill and West Bromwich.
The chain is continually looking to update its menu, from the main meals to the side orders and the sauces, and produce items which make people want to come in and enjoy something different.
To this end, GDK have added to their extensive list of sauces, which include yogurt, garlic and spicy by creating what the chain said is its spiciest sauce ever, a limited-edition Inferno sauce made from ghost chillies, the fourth hottest chilli in the world which measures in at between 855,000 and just over one million on the Scoville Scale.
It's being touted as a real test for any true spice head so, of course, I felt like it was worth a try to see just how spicy it is, being someone who enjoys a bit of spice and has about 14 bottles of hot sauce at home.
Living in Wolverhampton, the GDK restaurant on Queen Street was the setting for my visit to try the sauce and the kebab. I've eaten enough lamb and chicken kebabs in the past to know when I'm tasting quality or something that just fills a gap, so I was also interested to see what makes GDK different.

The restaurant was busy, with students from Wolverhampton College and University having lunch together and a steady stream of delivery drivers coming in to pick up orders from a restaurant that was clean, warm and had staff working hard and providing a friendly welcome.
I got chatting to Bhanu Sadhu, the supervisor at the restaurant, about the Inferno sauce and the Inferno OG, the meal with the sauce on it, with him telling me that there had been a great range of reactions from customers to the sauce, from feeling a bit hot to full blown hysterics.

He'd also tried it himself and found it to be very hot and wished me luck on trying it out.
I ordered the Boss Box, which costs £13.99 and consists of the OG Kebab, with Inferno sauce on it, served with a portion of the Doner Spring Rolls, a side of Inferno Fries, three Signature Sauces and a can of Dr Pepper, and prepared myself for the gastronomic experience ahead.

I've done a few heat-related food challenges in the past, but these were extremely hot sauces designed to make it a tough challenge, whereas this is designed to be a meal which, while hot, should also provide a proper taste and meal experience.
That being said, I could smell the chilli on the very ample chicken and beef kebab, with lettuce, onions and tomato, as well as a liberal sprinkling of the Inferno sauce, as it arrived at my table, as well as the sauce glistening on top of the fries.

It's lucky GDK provide napkins and a fork as this is a messy meal when you pick it up, with meal and salad falling onto the tray, but the first bite revealed a rich taste, of excellent and well-seasoned chicken and beef doner and crispy salad.
The sauce was also tangy and rich and didn't kick straightaway, providing more of a slow build as you could taste the tomato and pepper, then work your way up to the spicier bit.

It wasn't overly hot for me, but definitely built up to give a spicy aftertaste that warmed me up and gave me a nice endorphin rush, making me feel better as a result.
The meal itself was delicious and very filling, with the waffle bread nice and crisp and the inferno sauce adding a nice flavour to the fries, while the two spring rolls were crunchy and full of a range of rich flavours, with the end result being that you definitely feel like you've had your money's worth.

For me, the sauce is spicy and leaves you with a tingle, but that's just my opinion and my own heat tolerance. I'd recommend trying it though and even if you don't want to order the full kebab, you can still order a small pot of the Inferno sauce to dip your fries in.
As the weather is getting colder, people will be looking for ways to warm themselves up. GDK have provided a way to warm yourself up and it's worth a go.
