Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis visited Stafford Sports College to inspire youngsters in the build-up to the London 2012 games.

The 39-year-old told youngsters about her Olympic experiences.

She also took part in an assembly with pupils in years 7 and 8 as part of her visit yesterday – the day the Olympic Torch came to town.

Around 150 youngsters from five schools also took part in an athletics contest at the college.

The West-Bromwich born retired athlete, who grew up in Wolverhampton, won the gold in the heptathlon at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

She said: "The buzz ahead of the Olympic Torch is boiling. Today at Stafford Sports College I reminded the children that I was a little girl once but it does not stop there. You can be inspired by sport."
