Hundreds of senior citizens gathered for a sing-along with their pals and a slap-up meal in the Black Country.

The annual Bloxwich Carnival committee party attracted 300 guests, more than ever before.

It is traditionally held ahead of the town carnival at the King George V Playing Fields, this year on August 1.

Youngsters from Blakenall Heath Primary and Sneyd School also turned out to lend a hand in the afternoon at Bloxwich Leisure Centre, filled with tables and chairs for the occasion.

Diners broke out into song during the event, with tunes such as It's A Long Way to Tipperary and Show Me The Way To Go Home filling the air.

Pupils from Blakenall also performed songs from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Vice-chairman of the carnival committee George Jeavons, aged 60, said: "It is great because for many it is their only trip out of the house for a social occasion but they go out of the door saying see you next year."

It is thought the party for senior citizens, funded by the proceeds from the Bloxwich carnival, dates back to 1919.

Bloxwich carnival queen Sally Kirk, aged 18, attended with her grandmother Audrey Kirk, 88, of Alumwell.

Sally said: "It is great to be here with my nan. We have really enjoyed having a sing-a-along together."

Audrey added: "I think it is marvellous they put something like this on every year and for so many people. Everyone had a great afternoon."
