Michael Duff was dismissed on Tuesday, leaving Hounsell to assume the role of interim head coach.

Wycombe Wanderers interim head coach Tom Hounsell praised his side after an unsettled week, which ended in a 3-2 win at Leyton Orient.

In his first game since Michael Duff was dismissed on Tuesday, the stand-in boss led his side to their first victory since May.

Goals by Jayden Wareham, Fred Onyedinma and Daniel Harvie, with Jaze Kabia and an own goal netted for the hosts, gave Hounsell a lot of encouragement.

He said: “It’s been a difficult week and the message to the boys was belief and togetherness. And I thought we showed that.

“Was the performance perfect? No it wasn’t. But I thought the ability to swing momentum back into our favour was testament to their professionalism.

“Ultimately I thought that’s what got us through the game. That’s important in victory. You need to show grit, and I thought we were energised by that.

“Wareham is a quality footballer, we did a lot of work to get him in during the summer. He does that and he’s paid us back.

“The senior lads helped us through today, the type of individuals we’ve got really help us get through those moments.”

Orient are still looking for their first win at home this season, but head coach Richie Wellens was pleased his side showed toughness.

He said: “Overall I thought we had a pretty good day. There was a tiny little wobble after each goal, but that wasn’t as sustained as the Barnsley game. We kept going.

“Their first goal came out of nothing, it’s a mistake Isaac Hayden has never made before, and then you’re behind.

“It would have been easy to cave in after their goals, but to be fair we didn’t. The lads tried, and on another day we would have won.

“It is concerning, because how do you change the feel. You can’t just be reactive, ripping everything up after a loss. You have to go through processes, we’ve got the nucleus of a good team.

“That’s why we’ve been so inconsistent, you have to go through certain processes. People are playing at this level for the first time, and we need to improve the atmosphere.”

Wareham took advantage of a heavy touch by defender Hayden to give Wycombe a 14th-minute lead.

It took an own goal by Jack Grimmer, following a Yusuf Akhamrich cross on 36 minutes that was turned into his own net, for Orient to be level.

Onyedinma flicked his header off the post and into the net before half-time, then Harvie headed a third after the break.

An excellent solo run and cross by Akhamrich which was flicked in by Kabia on 52 minutes was not enough for Orient to prevent Wycombe joy.
