David Ajiboye deflected goal secures FA Cup win for Carlisle against Salford

Carlisle keeper Archie Mair saved a penalty from Ryan Graydon.
David Ajiboye’s deflection fired non-league Carlisle United into the second-round of the FA Cup at the expense of League Two leaders Salford City.
The ambitious Ammies had won eight league games in a row heading into the contest but they failed to break down the National League Cumbrians.
Morgan Feeney squandered a chance for the hosts when he nodded over in the first half before Regan Linney had an effort ruled out for offside.
Carlisle stopper Archie Mair kept out Ryan Graydon’s penalty in the 36th minute after Ade Oluwo was pulled down by Toby Mullarky and the referee pointed to the spot.
The hosts took a fortunate lead when Stephen Wearne’s strike was deflected in off Ajiboye on the stroke of half-time.
Salford keeper Lee Burg kept out another deflected strike from Wearne just after the restart before Feeney headed over once more.
Luke Armstrong could have put the game to bed late on but squandered the chance nodding Callum Camps’ corner over the bar.
But Rob Elliot’s side held on to their slender lead for a memorable triumph as Salford failed to pass the first round for the third year running.
