Saido Berahino is back in the game, says Rickie Lambert

Saido Berahino is getting better mentally according to strike partner Rickie Lambert, who admits that he hasn't done enough himself to get back into the regular Albion team.

Berahino was handed his first start for the Baggies since October on Saturday, and he grabbed his chance by scoring both goals in the 2-2 FA Cup draw with Peterborough.

Whether he's still at the club or not after today's transfer deadline slams shut at 11pm, he's proved he hasn't lost the sharp-shooting finishing that makes him such a hot young prospect.

Lambert set up Berahino's first goal with a simple lay-off.

"It's always nice to have players scoring goals," said the 33-year-old. "I'm not sure of the situation – he seems a little better mentally, and I thought you could see that against Peterborough.

"He's a great finisher, it comes naturally to him. He's one of the first people I look for when I get the ball because I know he can put it in the back of the net."

Lambert has struggled to keep a permanent place in the team since signing from Liverpool in the summer for £3million.

He was handed a rare chance to impress on Saturday and even though he set up one of the goals, he was disappointed with how he performed.

Giving an honest assessment of his own form, Lambert said: "No, I don't think I've done enough to try and force myself in but I will keep on trying, keep on getting my touch back," he said. "It doesn't seem to be there at the minute but I'll keep on working behind the scenes."

The England forward was surprised by the way League One Posh struck back in the last 11 minutes, but even though Albion now face another replay and another game, Lambert would rather be in the draw than out of it.

"We've got a strong enough squad to deal with it," he said.
