Wolves score late to secure friendly win at Doncaster

Match report from Wolves’ friendly win.

Wolves scored two late goals to win at Doncaster as part of their preparations for the 2026/27 Championship season.

The visitors came close to opening the scoring inside the first five minutes when a lovely one-two between Tommy Doyle and Adam Armstrong resulted in the former playing a stunning through ball for Tom Edozie.

The winger only had goalkeeper Tommy Simkin to beat, but his shot was saved.

Following that early chance, Wolves did well enough in containing the opposition but offered very little going forward.

It was a typical pre-season match played at a lower tempo, while the changes Cesar Peixoto made were evident in his team’s lack of quality.

In particular, Wolves struggled for a cutting edge in attack as the half ended goalless.

Only goalkeeper Dan Bentley stayed on the pitch for the second half, as Peixoto made 10 outfield changes to name a stronger side.

Wolves immediately looked brighter and came close when Fer Lopez attempted a one-two in the box and the ball fell for Tawanda Chirewa, but Simkin was quick off his line to make a block.

The game briefly threatened to boil over when Doncaster forward Hakeeb Adelakun chased down a long ball and left a foot in on Bentley, which caused Ladislav Krejci to react angrily, but team-mates and the officials were able to split it up.

Wolves then came close again when Chirewa found himself in space on the left, but his near post effort was palmed away.

A loose ball from Ethan Sutherland gave the hosts a chance to break and Adelakun was released. His shot was saved, although it was an unconvincing palm away by Bentley.

Moments later, a very similar situation saw Sutherland give the ball away in his own box this time and Adelakun had an effort saved.

It had suddenly become an end-to-end game and Wolves came close when Pedro Lima was found on the right, but once again the visitors were denied.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 82nd minute when a mistake from Doncaster’s goal-kick saw Andre collect the ball and find Lopez and his low shot found the back of the net off the post.

Just three minutes after taking the lead Wolves won a penalty when Chirewa pounced on a rebound and was brought down by the goalkeeper.

The academy graduate picked himself up off the turf to finish into the bottom corner, as two late goals secured Wolves’ win.
