Wolves boss tells derby hero Fer Lopez he can still ‘do better!’

Cesar Peixoto reflected on Wolves’ relentless pressing and the role it played in their Black Country derby victory.

Boss Cesar Peixoto said Wolves’ Black Country derby hero Fer Lopez could still improve despite his match-winning contribution.

Lopez capitalised on a defensive error from Nat Phillips to fire Wolves to victory over their fierce rivals at Molineux.

The goal was the Spaniard’s fourth Championship contribution of the season, but Peixoto insists there is still more to come from the 22-year-old.

He told the Express & Star: “He can do better!

“He played well, but he can do better, all the time I want more from him and all the players.”

Wolves’ goal came after their relentless pressing forced Albion into mistakes, with Lopez eventually pouncing on Phillips’ stray pass.

Peixoto praised his players for executing their pressing game and putting West Brom under sustained pressure.

He added: “All of the players understand what they have to do. In the first half, we won the ball back a lot through our high press and at half-time, I corrected one little thing with our winger and then we scored from that situation.

“I’m happy with that because the players believed and put in a lot of effort. We played with courage and the players were brave in the duels, with the first balls and second balls.

“When we had to press, we pressed and when we had to close the team, we closed the team. We played with quality, but I think we could have scored more goals.”

Wolves had been denied several times in the first half by Albion goalkeeper Max O’Leary, who produced a string of impressive saves.

“I asked the players not to drop anything - not the way we were playing, the press, the intensity, the aggression or the quality,” Peixoto added.

“We had to maintain all of that and give even more because we deserved to score, but I have a lot of confidence in the players and they followed the plan today almost to perfection.”
