Fletcher, who has eight caps, questioned Levein after being excluded from the recent Euro 2012 qualifiers against Spain and Sweden and isn't in the squad to face the Faroe Islands in Wednesday's friendly at Aberdeen.

Levein said: "Steven hasn't put in a performance which makes me think I can hang my hat on him.

"Steven and I haven't really developed a relationship. It's probably easier for him to have a go at me because of that.

"That won't have a bearing on him being involved in the squad or not. Steven isn't starting games for Wolves just now and hasn't done for a while.

"But he won't be left out of any squad because he's had a go. I'm looking at players whose strengths and weaknesses I can get to know and I know that with Steven.

"I've seen a lot of him."

But Fletcher, who scored his fourth goal of the season after coming off the bench in Saturday's 3-2 defeat to Bolton, made light of the situation.

He said: "I said what I said - it's football. If I continue scoring goals then hopefully I'll be in there on merit.

"He said I wasn't in the squad because I wasn't playing but I just need to keep scoring goals, then hopefully I'll get an opportunity."

At club level, Fletcher is convinced Wolves' fortunes will turn despite suffering their fifth defeat in six games and eighth in 10 Premier League games.

He said: "We'll keep going and it will come.

"We need to do better and we will - we've got the players to do it and hopefully we can erase that and push on."

Fletcher, who has made just five league starts for Wolves, wants to operate as a central striker but insisted he is happy to play anywhere.

He said: "I haven't been getting much action recently but when the gaffer does give me opportunities, hopefully I'll take them.

"I've got the self belief to score goals and hopefully I can get a start.

"I'm happy to do a job for the team - I played wide on Saturday and I scored when I was playing wide at Tottenham."
