Staying put! Wolves goalkeeper signs new contract

The Portuguese international was linked with a move away from Wolves this summer before re-establishing himself as No.1.

Goalkeeper Jose Sa has signed a contract extension with Wolves until the end of the 2027/28 season.

The 33-year-old - capped five times by Portugal - has spent five years at Molineux, but was linked with a move away all summer.

He missed the first two games of the season, but returned for the 3-1 victory at Preston North End, and has now put pen to paper on a new deal.

Technical director Matt Jackson said: “Jose has proved his level during his time at the club. He’s an international goalkeeper and is a big character in our dressing room, so is a huge asset for the football club.

“When a player is in the final year of his contract, it can be difficult for some. I don’t think Jose is necessarily one of those because he’s mentally tough and has seen everything in football, but he deserves a reward and the security it brings.

“This brings stability. We knew that we would be revamping the goalkeeping department and we really like how it’s ended up. It’s given Dan (Bentley) an opportunity to leave permanently and Sam (Johnstone) desperately needed to play and has gone to a massive football club. Now we’ve got three really good, professional goalkeepers to a proven standard which we can build around this season.”

Sa was expected to leave a part of a revamp of the goalkeeping department this summer, with Bentley taking the gloves for much of pre-season.

Bentley returned to the Premier League with Coventry and Johnstone was loaned out to Celtic after recovering from shoulder surgery.

Joao Virginia and John Ruddy were recruited by Wolves and, at the end of last week, head coach Cesar Peixoto was ‘still not 100 per cent’ that Sa would stay.

However, he now has a chance to add to his 174 appearances for Wolves, during which he has kept 41 clean sheets.
