The 18-year-old joined from Paraguayan side Libertad at the end of the summer window for £5million on a six-year contract.

Gonzalez has yet to feature for the first team but has played once for the under-21s, and O’Neil says the winger still has plenty to do to get up to full speed.

“He still needs a lot of work, as expected,” O’Neil said.

“People may listen to that or read it and think it’s a negative, but it isn’t. It’s just where he is.

“It’s to be expected, he’s a young lad. The Premier League is the top level and he needs a lot of work and we’re trying to get it into him as quickly as we can.

“He’s enjoying it and enjoying being around the group, and I’m sure he’ll have an impact, but there’s a lot of work to do.
