Dave Jones: Wolves must hold onto stars

Former promotion-winning Wolves boss Dave Jones believes keeping hold of the club's current stars may be Nuno's biggest challenge should they go up this season.

Fans and pundits are already predicting that Nuno's Wolves – who are 13 points clear of third place with 15 games to go – can thrive in the top flight should they win promotion.

Jones, who took Wolves to the Premier League in 2003, has been impressed with the runaway Championship leaders.

And speaking from experience he said the summer's recruitment – both incoming and outgoing – will be vital should Wolves return to the top flight.

"The hardest part for the club will be to keep those players," Jones said.

"If they're good, top players they'll be tough to keep.

"You've got the help of (Jorge) Mendes, so you're bringing in top quality players already, which helps.

"When we were promoted that was the time to go again, to bring in players of Premier League quality and help the players we were going to keep. We didn't do that.

"Recruitment is the biggest thing at a club.

"I don't know a great deal about the manager but he seems to know what he wants, he seems to get what he wants and that's important.

"He sticks to his guns and isn't easily persuaded – at a club as big as Wolves that's what you need, to make your decisions and stick by them."

Jones still lives locally and has been to Molineux on a number of occasions this season.

He added: "They play some great football. They've got a way of playing that's nice on the eye.

"I watched them against Cardiff and they were beaten up but it looks like they've learned from that – that was important.

"They've played some really nice, easy football.

"You get into that confidence mode that even if they go a goal down they've got enough in their ranks to score.

"They've spent a lot of money, which is good for the club and the fans because they're seeing quality players and a club like Wolves deserves that with the fanbase they've got."
