Wolves looked back to their old selves at Portman Road and the scoreline flattered Mick McCarthy’s team. Doherty scored his second goal of the season to win it for Wolves, heading home Barry Douglas’s cross.

And the Irishman said: “Our performances lately haven’t been out of this world by any means but at Ipswich we defended really well, we should have scored more goals and I think somebody could be on the end of a few goals coming soon.

“We were back to our best, I thought. I saw Barry get down the line and he always seems to put in a decent cross and I just backed him to stand something up at the back post, managed to get my face in the way and it slid in.

“It was a bit like slow motion – it went down and it was spinning but I could see that it was going in.

“I was just waiting for to hit the net so I could start celebrating to be honest! I get in quite good positions, I’ve missed quite a few chances where it’s not fallen my way but I’ve managed to get on the scoresheet in a 1-0 win away at Ipswich – you can’t beat that really.

“Ipswich is one of the hardest places to go especially away from home – winter, yellow ball, the pitch’s a bit boggy and we showed our class today and really put on a good performance.”

The squad spent last week in Marbella, Spain, on a mid-season warm weather training camp.

Doherty believes it did the squad the world of good. “There was a bit of fun, we did a lot of work obviously, we were allowed to do our own thing at times which was good,” he said.

“It was just a normal week that would have been at the training ground – we had afternoons off where we went and did our own thing, so yeah it definitely helped.

“We obviously went away and trained hard, enjoyed ourselves and it was important that we got back to winning ways after last week’s performance. It was quite comfortable – it felt really good out there, I felt sharp and I’m sure all of the lads did, that shows in the performance.”

During their break they met heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury, who took time to meet the players and pose for picture.

Doherty said of the visit: “It was nice to be able to see where he was training and how he works out in the gym.

“He didn’t give us a pep talk or anything. It was all just general chit-chat and we were asking about his training schedule. It was nice, it was something different and a good thing to do.

“To meet someone from a different profession training in Marbella, someone at the top of their game, was good. Some of the lads may not like boxing but they all wanted to meet him. Not just the players but the staff, too.”
